Manchester United stated that Diallo's gesture was a response to severe personal insults directed at his mother.

Diallo addressed the incident on X (formerly Twitter), writing, "I have respect for people, but not for those who insult my mum. I shouldn't have reacted like that, but I don't regret what I did."

The club clarified that the abuse, which occurred as players boarded the team bus, was not racially motivated.

There had been speculation that the 21-year-old's reaction was prompted by fans shouting "Diallo" at him.

According to BBC, incident follows a 2021 case in Italy where Diallo (then using the name Traore) was fined for using false documents related to his immigration. He subsequently dropped "Traore" and now goes by simply "Amad."

Manchester United lost 1-0 to the ASEAN All-Stars on Wednesday, with Diallo making a second-half appearance. The team concludes their post-season tour with a match against Hong Kong on Friday.
