Manchester United are finalizing a £62.5m transfer for a Brazilian striker to strengthen their squad after a disappointing season.

Manchester United have finalized the £62.5 million signing of Brazil international Matheus Cunha.

BBC has reported that the striker has completed the bulk of formalities and has switched from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The 26-year-old was in Manchester over the weekend, where he met with United officials and visited the club’s Carrington training complex.

Cunha was spotted leaving the Lowry Hotel on Sunday morning, accompanied by his wife Gabriela and their young son.

He has since flown to Brazil to join up with the national team ahead of Friday's World Cup qualifier against Ecuador — Carlo Ancelotti's first game in charge.

Cunha was granted permission by Wolves last week to undergo his medical, which is believed to have been completed successfully.

He become Ruben Amorim's first signing of the summer and the process of obtaining a visa has been completed.

Goals, Farewells, and a Tearful Goodbye

The former Atletico Madrid striker enjoyed a prolific season at Molineux, scoring 15 Premier League goals in 33 appearances.

In total, he netted 33 goals across 92 matches for Wolves, after initially joining on loan in January 2023. Wolves made the move permanent that summer in a deal worth up to €40 million (£35 million).

Speaking about his personal life in a BBC Sport interview, Cunha recalled his emotional wedding in Brazil last year.

“It was really emotional – I cried a lot! I saw all my family there, my son, and it was very beautiful. My wife was amazing. It was a beautiful moment.”

The player was visibly emotional as he waved farewell to Wolves fans at Molineux after their final Premier League fixture — a 1-1 draw with Brentford.

Cunha appeared tearful while applauding supporters, signaling the end of a memorable three-year stint in the West Midlands.

Amorim's First Signing Amid a Tumultuous Offseason

Negotiations between Wolves and Manchester United have progressed quickly in recent days.

United have agreed to meet Cunha's £62.5 million release clause, with the fee to be paid in three instalments over two years. The move is seen as a critical piece of United's rebuilding process following a turbulent campaign that saw them finish 15th in the Premier League — level on points with Wolves.

United's post-season tour of Malaysia was marred by several controversies, adding to the urgency to reinforce the squad.

Amorim, who joined from Sporting Lisbon, was asked about the club’s summer plans during the tour but declined to comment on Cunha’s expected arrival.

Cunha's imminent signing offers a major boost for Amorim and a glimmer of hope for fans eager to see the club return to form.
