Mamelodi Sundowns Coach Issues Defiant Statement Amid Pitso Mosimane Links to His Job
Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has moved to dispel rumours that he is set to leave the club soon with Pitso Mosimane assuming his role.
Cardoso’s position has been thrust into the spotlight in the last two weeks following reports that Sundowns are in talks with Mosimane over the possibility of replacing him.
That has left the Portuguese coach facing questions about his future and while he has not specifically addressed the issue, he has made an indication that he is very much in charge.
Cardoso, went on Instagram live on Sunday and filmed his team’s training session in Polokwane, showing players in high spirits as they were taken through various drills by the technical staff.
Part of the drills included penalty shootouts, finishing and positioning where different groups competed against each other with the winner finally declared.
What Does the Future Hold for Cardoso?
Cardoso moved around filming the session while calling up players and other team officials to share their views on what was going on.
While it looked like just a fun session involving a coach and his players, it was a statement of defiance from Cardoso who has been at Sundowns since December 2024.
The Portuguese coach led the South African giants to the league title and CAF Champions League final, which they lost, last season as well as a group stage exit at the FIFA Club World Cup, where they excited fans with their display.
Sundowns have, however, not had a great first half of this season, despite sitting just two points behind leaders Orlando Pirates, with 13 points dropped from as many games while their style of play has not been good on the eye.
It remains to be seen if the Mosimane rumours are true or whether Cardoso will see out the season.
