The Dutchman recorded 54 wins, 24 draws, and 25 losses, securing only one trophy at Manchester United, the 2015-16 FA Cup, defeating Crystal Palace 2-1 in the final.

"When other people buy players, then it's a problem. You have to have the knowledge and expertise of the manager because he's the one who has to coach them," the current Ajax advisor told Sky Sports.

"It's still a commercial club. It's not a football club. I've said this before, but it's always difficult. When the manager isn't the one deciding which player to bring in, it's very tough."

"If the manager controls the acquisitions and doesn't get results, then you can sack the manager. But when other people are buying the players, then you have a big problem. You must have the manager's knowledge and guidance because he has to coach them," Van Gaal fumed.

Van Gaal wanted Lewandowski, Neymar, and Sergio Ramos

In 2019, Van Gaal first heavily criticized his former club, stating, "I didn't always get the players I wanted. That's the problem. There's Woodward (then-executive vice-chairman) and his right-hand man, Matt Judge, the head of corporate development."

"I met Judge occasionally, but not very often. And then there was the head of scouting. That was the structure, but you're always dependent on Woodward and Judge."

Among the signing during his time include the likes of Angel Di Maria, Ander Herrera, Luke Shaw and Memphis Depay among other buys.

The Manchester Evening News reported that Van Gaal wanted to sign stars like Robert Lewandowski, Neymar, and Sergio Ramos at the time.

Van Gaal's former employer endured a disastrous 2024-25 season, finishing trophyless.

They lost the Europa League final 1-0 to Tottenham, finished a humiliating 15th in the Premier League, breaking several club negative records under Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim.
