Wilfried Gnonto was pulled from the match against Malta due to an ankle injury, which has delivered Leeds United a severe injury setback ahead of their clash against Arsenal.

On Sunday night, Gnonto was given a rare opportunity to start for his country Italy in their Euro 2024 qualifying match. However, he only played for 20 minutes before suffering an ankle sprain as a result of an opponent's challenge.

According to Sky Italia journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, the 20-year-old tried to continue but eventually gave up due to the problem. He was obviously upset by the injury.

Gnonto suffers an ankle injury

Due to the injury, he sustained against Malta during the Euro 2024 qualifying matches, the Leeds United attacker who has been a regular starter for his team will be unable to travel to the Emirate stadium on Saturday.

Sky Italia journalist Gianluca Di Marzio in an interview, said, “Gnonto had an ankle problem (probably a sprain) which immediately forced him to ask for a substitution.

“Vincenzo Grifo came on in his place, with Gnonto leaving the field with an obviously unhappy expression. The young winger had started his match well, but had to abandon the challenge after just over 20 minutes.”

It’s absolutely typical that after picking up a vital win in the Premier League we lose all momentum to an international break, but then two of our most influential players get injured too.

Leeds Injury woes

With a crucial match against Arsenal coming up, it would be ideal to have both players available. First, Max Wober with Austria was forced off, and now Gnonto has twisted his ankle.

The extent of their injury is unknown until a proper diagnosis has been made, and there is still a week before that game. The fact that they were both hurt and had to leave the field indicates that it was more serious than a minor bump, and they will both struggle to participate in the game at all.

This is a major setback for Leeds, as Javi Gracia is trying to gain momentum after pulling away from the relegation zone. Nevertheless, without two important players, we risk being dragged back in.
