Kenyan referees have been hailed after making two big calls during the CAF Champions League semi-final between Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly in Pretoria.

Kenyan referees Stephen Yiembe, Gilbert Cheruiyot and Peter Waweru Kamaku had an incident-free game as they took charge of the CAF Champions League match pitting Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly.

The three Kenyan officials were among six referees chosen by CAF for the high stakes semi-final first leg match played at Sundowns’ Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria on Saturday afternoon that ended goalless.

Yiembe and Cheruiyot were the assistants to centre referee Omar Artan from Somalia while Kamaku was the fourth official.

Meanwhile, Pierre Ghislain Atch from Gabon and Ghanaian Daniel Laryea were in charge of Video Technology.

The match had few incidents that needed big calls from the match officials in the first half as both teams opted to defend rather than attack.

However, in the second half, the two assistant referees were called into action as Al Ahly scored two goals but were denied by the flag.

In the 68th minute, Al Ahly’s Slovenian striker Nejc Gradisar thought he had broken the deadlock when he slotted in from the box but Yiembe flagged him offside and a VAR check proved the Kenyan referee right.

Both sides then continued their cautious approach but in the 90th minute, Al Ahly had the ball in the net again but the flag was up for a second time, this time from Cheruiyot.

Achraf Bencharki thought he had beaten the Sundowns offside trap and sprinted towards goal to slot home but Cheruiyot flagged him offside and the call turned out to be right one as the game ended goalless.

It leaves Al Ahly under pressure to win at home and they must avoid conceding an away goal in the second leg in Cairo on Friday, April 25.

For the Kenyan referees, it was another good outing in their latest assignment and they will hope to maintain the standards in their subsequent assignments.

The three are among highly-rated African referees as they have officiated in the CAF Champions League on numerous occasions as well as the Africa Cup of Nations and Olympics.

From the three, Yiembe will be heading to the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States in June, having been the only East African referee selected for the tournament.
