The Brighton and Hove Albion academy graduate provided an update on his recovery process.

After his season was blighted by a nasty knee injury, Kenyan forward Jonah Ayunga is anxious about hitting the heights he attained before going under the knife.

The 26-year-old picked up a devastating injury back in January and had an operation in early March to reconstruct his ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).

The Brighton and Hove Albion academy graduate provided an update on his recovery process and opened up on his biggest worry as he plans to return to action next season.

“I've stayed pretty level through the whole thing, I've had a long term injury before. It's just getting around your head over what happened and dealing with it because you can't change what happened.

“The only real worry is hoping you come back to the same level to where you were before because it's a long timeto be out, it was a big injury and I hope I get back to the same level. Other than that it's just been going through the process day by day,” said Ayunga.

Ayunga was having an impressive debut season with St Mirren after joining from English side Morecambe FC where he had previously worked with his current head coach Stephen Robinson.

The forward revealed that his rehabilitation is ahead of schedule as he is close to making a full return to training ahead of the new 2023/2024 Scottish Premier League season.

“Up until now it has been pretty smooth, every stage we've gone through quite well and we've been ahead of schedule and now coming into the last period it's just about hitting the targets and being considered safe to return.

“I got injured towards the end of January, around six months ago and had the operation around 2nd of March and I'm coming up to 18 weeks since the operation,” he added.

Ayunga is eligible to play for Harambee Stars and was previously called up to the Under 23 side back in 2018 before suffering an injury in training.
