Kevin Okumu is part of the Harambee Stars squad set to represent Kenya at the CHAN 2024.

KCB FC defender Kevin Okumu has spoken candidly about the perseverance and dedication it took to earn his first-ever call-up to the Harambee Stars squad ahead of the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, which kicks off this August.

The regional tournament, co-hosted for the first time in history by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania,  will be a historic event, doubling as a test run for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), also scheduled to be hosted by the three East African nations.

For Okumu, the opportunity to don the national colors represents the culmination of years of hard work at the domestic level.

The versatile right-back, who can also operate as a right winger, has gained top-flight experience with clubs like KCB, Nairobi City Stars, and FC Kariobangi Sharks, as well as lower-tier sides such as Young Rovers.

“It is a big moment for me because I have been working throughout this time. I wanted to represent my country at the tournament, because it is a big honor,” Okumu told FKF TV.

The defender, known for his composure and work ethic, credited his journey to patience and resilience, admitting that the road to international recognition hasn't been smooth.

“It has been a long journey for me to get here. Your time will come. You must not give up,” he said.

Now firmly part of Benni McCarthy’s CHAN 2024 squad, Okumu is determined to prove his worth. With CHAN regulations allowing only locally-based players to feature, the competition for places has been fierce.

“I have set myself a high bar because it is a first call-up and I have to prove myself to the coach and the nation.”

Okumu’s Bold Promise to Kenyans

Despite being drawn into a challenging Group A — which includes Morocco, DR Congo, Angola, and Zambia — Okumu believes the team spirit and local chemistry among the squad members will give Kenya an edge.

“The team is in high spirits. We have no foreigners. We speak the same language, so the team is gelling well and I am sure we will do well.”

The KCB defender urged fans to fill the stands at Kasarani Stadium, where the home side will play their matches.

“The fans should turn up in large numbers. We want good results. As much as we are in a hard group, we will give it our best shot.”

With the tournament just days away, Okumu's story offers inspiration for many domestic league players dreaming of wearing the national team jersey. His presence in the squad is a reminder that persistence and patience can open the door to international football.
