I Had My Doubts– Mikel Arteta Admits Arsenal Squad Lacked Quality from Day One

Mikel Arteta admits Arsenal’s squad lacked depth from the start and promises major summer signings to reignite title hopes.

Arsenal have been a talk among fans all season long – whether for their Champions League run, their title challenge, or, ultimately, their inability to clinch silverware for a fifth straight campaign.

But while supporters have passionately debated where it all went wrong, Mikel Arteta has now admitted he saw the signs long before the first ball of the season was kicked.

In a revealing assessment, the Gunners manager confirmed that he and his coaching staff were well aware from the outset that the squad lacked the depth and resilience needed to challenge elite rivals like Liverpool across an entire Premier League season.

“We knew from the beginning of the season that our squad was super short,” Arteta said as per The Sun.

“Being super short we had some players that had a high probability of getting injured, because that’s what they had in the last few seasons. So we knew that and we cannot do anything about it.”

A Thin Squad Struggled to Keep Pace

Arsenal’s challenge faded under the weight of injuries and fatigue. An early injury to Kai Havertz disrupted attacking rhythm, while long-term absences for key players like Jurrien Timber and Gabriel Martinelli exposed the squad’s lack of alternatives.

Only Declan Rice and William Saliba managed to start over 30 Premier League games, in stark contrast to Liverpool’s core players who consistently featured week in, week out.

Arteta acknowledged that this lack of consistency and availability across his roster played a decisive role in the Gunners’ shortcomings.

“That's a big thing to win trophies, you know, and they [Liverpool] did that extremely well,” he noted.

“They managed to maintain that consistency, that level of players, a system, a coach, a stadium… you need a lot of ingredients or you don't win the Premier League.”

Summer Reinforcements Incoming

Despite the disappointment, Arteta has promised supporters that change is coming.

The club is expected to back him heavily in the summer transfer window, with Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi, a new striker – either Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres or Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko – and Spain winger Nico Williams all on the radar.

“We will do everything that we can to improve the team and especially improve the players that we already have,” Arteta said.

“Whatever the market offers to give us a better chance to win for sure we will try to do it.”

Behind closed doors, discussions over recruitment and strategy have been ongoing for months. Arteta stressed that preparation for next season did not just begin at the final whistle.

“That is not something we have just started to talk about now. If we were only having those meetings now we would be doing it very late,” he explained.

No Excuses, Just Ambition

Still, the Spaniard refused to hide behind excuses. Though absences and fine margins hurt Arsenal’s hopes, Arteta insists the goal is still clear: bring trophies back to the Emirates.

“We have to do it our way. We have to be authentic with ourselves and what we believe, what we can do and what we've been doing. That’s it,” he said.

“I really want it because that is what this club needs and has been so close to achieving. Now we need to make it happen.”

Arsenal fans will be hoping their manager’s vision – paired with new signings and better luck with injuries – finally turns promise into silverware next season.
