The assistant coach has taken steps to reassure Hugo Broos after being named as Bafana Bafana's potential next coach.

South Africa's assistant coach, Helman Mkhalele, has taken a significant step toward addressing concerns about his coaching qualifications.

This move could pave the way for him to lead the national team eventually. Helman Mkhalele has been a trusted lieutenant to head coach Hugo Broos, and together they have revitalised Bafana Bafana's fortunes.

The team recently secured a crucial 2-0 victory over Rwanda, putting them in a strong position in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.

This success has been achieved with a squad predominantly composed of local talent, with Burnley's Lyle Foster being one of the few players from a major European league.

With Hugo Broos announcing his intention to step down after the 2026 World Cup, questions have arisen about his successor. The 74-year-old Belgian has publicly endorsed Helman Mkhalele, highlighting the importance of continuity.

"I think the best thing to do is for Helman to become the coach after me, because then you have a follow-up on the same thing," Hugo Broos said as quoted by Pan Africa Football.

"When Helman takes the team, the way of work and the philosophy will be the same, with a little bit more African thing because I’m European. Helman 95% he thinks the same thing as me."

However, the AFCON-winning manager also noted a potential obstacle, Helman Mkhalele's coaching credentials. Hugo Broos expressed concern that his assistant's qualifications might not meet the requirements for such a high-profile role.

Helman Mkhalele: Pursuing Higher Qualifications

In a clear move to bolster his credentials, Helman Mkhalele has enrolled in a CAF A-Licence coaching course in neighbouring Lesotho.

The Lesotho Football Association confirmed that the Bafana Bafana assistant is one of 24 candidates participating in the program.

He is joined by other notable South African football figures, including former Moroka Swallows star Mpho Maleka, who currently manages Pretoria Callies, and David Nyathi, the coach of South Africa's under-17 national team.

According to the Lesotho Football Association, the first phase of the course is scheduled to run from November 18 to 25 at the Bambatha Ts’ita Sports Arena, marking a proactive step by Helman Mkhalele to prepare for a potential future as Bafana Bafana's head coach.
