7 African Footballers Who Deserve Ballon d'Or 2025 Recognition
Pulse Sports highlights the African players who deserve to make the 2025 Ballon d’Or shortlist after an impressive 2024-25 campaign.
GK-Lillian Awuor (GK) -6
Starting in between the sticks, goalkeeper Lillian Awuor made a string of saves to deny Tanzania from extending their lead, and her score would have been much higher were it not for the unfortunate own goal she accidentally netted when attempting to make a diving stop to deny a low cross drilled in from the left flank.
Otherwise, her organisational skills were top notch, and she got called to action on several occasions to spare Kenya a lot of blushes.
CB-Ruth Ingosi -7
Starting as the right center back, Ruth Ingotsi was, alongside her partner Dorcas Shikobe, outstanding.
Kenya were subjected to waves and waves of pressure by Tanzania for much of the game, and she was commanding in the air, while at the same time was tenacious on the tackle and also took a resolute approach clearing the ball whenever the opportunity allowed.
Solid individual performance.

CB-Dorcas Shikobe © -7
The captain was also resolute defensively, making several clearances throughout the game, and will have been disappointed that they ended up conceding -although you may say that lone Tanzania goal was well deserved and had been coming for a while.
LB-Enez Mango-6
The better of the two full backs, Enez Mango quietly went about her business, but Tanzania mostly created inroads by attacking the right hand side, speaking of which…
RB -Vivian Nasaka- 3
A very disappointing display by Vivian Nasaka, who was terrorised down the right flank by Tanzania captain Opa Clement Tukumbuke.
She was also easily outspan by Clara Luvanga in the build up to the goal, considering the Saudi Arabia based player received the ball with her back to goal, before shielding and turning away from Nasaka and then running with it to the byline before cutting it back for the own goal.
DM -Martha Amunyolet-5
Playing as the defensive midfielder, Amunyolet could hardly find space and time to control the tempo of the game, with Tanzania putting her under pressure in build up for most of the game.
She also struggled to give the back line the kind of protection it needed, and it is explained in the fact that they created waves of attack throughout.

CHAN 2024: Kenya, Uganda And Tanzania Find Out Opener And Final Matches Hosting Fate
CAF has confirmed the host stadiums for Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN)
CM -Lavender Ann Akinyi -4
Akinyi was kept quiet for much of the game, and struggled to assert her presence.
CM -Diana Wacera-5
Wacera was perhaps the best of all three midfielders. She was neat and tidy in possession, but adopted a safety first approach to be honest, considering she barely progressed the ball forward.
LW- Fasila Adhiambo-4
Although she showed flashes of brilliance, Fasila Adhiambo was culpable of giving the ball away way too much throughout the game, as if she wanted to bask in the glory herself.
It often left the side vulnerable to the counter attack
RW- Violet Nanjala-3
Violet Nanjala struggled to maintain her momentum from the previous game against Uganda, in which she netted a hat trick.
She barely received the ball out from wide, and was isolated too much, considering she also had to do more defensive work given the threat Clement brought to the game throghout.
CF -Tumaini Waliaula-4
Struggled to get clear cut chances during the game, and although Kenya created a couple of chances on the break, it ultimately was not enough, as she found herself miscontroling some of the throughballs fed to her.

SUBSTITUTES

Brought in energy upfront and pressed, but never got enough chances to test Tanzania.

Brought in on the right flank to try and give Kenya more ball retention upfront, but could not create much.
Medina Abubakar-N/A
Came on in the 85th minute and did not have sufficient time to influence the outcome of the match.
