The Mashemeji Derby comes at a time when Gor Mahia are embroilled in a thrilling three-way battle for the title.

As the FKF Premier League title race intensifies, Gor Mahia’s trusted forward Benson Omala has raised the stakes ahead of the much-anticipated Mashemeji Derby against arch-rivals AFC Leopards.

With the season nearing its climax, Omala has made it clear that June 2 fixture at the Raila Odinga Stadium is more than just a grudge match, it's a potential title decider.

Omala knows what it takes to secure a win the Mashemeji derby having scored in the fixture last campaign, enroute to Gor Mahia lifting the title.

"For us players, the Mashemeji Derby is usually a big game," Omala told Gor Mahia's media team ahead of the 97th edition of the rivalry.

“As you can see, with the position we are in now, we cannot afford to lose points or the game if we want to win the league.”

Currently, Gor Mahia sit third on the table with 54 points, trailing Tusker (55 points) and leaders Kenya Police (61 points).

A slip-up against Leopards could severely dent their title hopes. However, Omala believes a win could reignite their championship charge, especially if Kenya Police falter against Shabana.

Playing at the Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay County, an area with deep Gor Mahia roots, the team is counting on their supporters to tilt the balance in their favor.

Omala called on the Green Army to show up in numbers and push the team over the line.

“To our fans, I want to urge them to come out in large numbers and give us support because when we see the green and white colours, we will give our best and give them the victory,” he said.

“We have to push ourselves to also give our fans bragging rights.”

Gor Mahia’s path to the title remains challenging. Beyond defeating AFC Leopards, they must also win their final fixture against Ulinzi Stars and hope Police drop points.

But with players like Omala leading the charge, K’Ogalo's title dream remains very much alive.
