More Than Just a Match

The defender emphasized the importance of fan support in such high-stakes matches, urging the Green Army to play their role as the team’s 12th man.

"Derby is not like other matches," he explained.

"There are so many things that happen in the derby – the fans, the atmosphere, the drums. When you're on the pitch and you hear that noise, it lifts you. It motivates every player."

While every game is crucial in the run-in to the end of the season, Ochieng acknowledged that the Mashemeji Derby carries added weight, not only for the points but for pride and morale.

He noted that Gor Mahia players are focused and will approach the game with the seriousness it deserves.

“We take every match at a time, and I know every player is going to do his best, at least for the team," he said.

The derby has long been one of the most intense fixtures in Kenyan football, and this year’s edition is set to be no different, with both clubs having much to prove.

The Fans Hold the Key

Ochieng's message is that the presence and energy of the fans could be the difference-maker.

“The Green Army, 12th man, always. We are always eager to hear them on the stand when they are making that sound,” he said.

The defender urged supporters to turn up in numbers and create the electric atmosphere that has defined past derbies.

With the stakes high and the title potentially hanging in the balance, all eyes will be on Homa Bay come June 2.
