AFC Leopards fans are demanding half of the tickets for Monday's Mashemeji Derby against Gor Mahia in Homa Bay, citing plans for massive turnout and fair representation.

The build-up to the highly anticipated 97th edition of the Mashemeji Derby between Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards has taken a new twist as Ingwe fans demand an equal share of tickets for the fixture.

Scheduled to be played on Monday at the newly constructed Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay, the clash promises fireworks both on and off the pitch.

With the 12,000-capacity venue set to host the epic clash, Leopards supporters are mobilising in large numbers and insist on being allocated half of the available seats.

Ticket Allocation Dispute Heats Up

According Franklin “Kuka” Imbenzi, an executive member overseeing the AFC Leopards’ branches, Ingwe fans are planning to show up in large numbers in Homa Bay.

“We are mobilising our over 80 club branches to ferry supporters to Homa Bay in large numbers as we look forward to finishing the league in a respectable position,” said Imbenzi as quoted by Nation Sports.

“We shall definitely be more than 6,000 and want to be assured of enough space at the Homa Bay Stadium. The league title is out of our reach, but we have vowed to support the team to finish in a respectable position.”

The ticket allocation dispute comes after AFC Leopards hosted the previous leg of the derby at a sold-out Nyayo Stadium in March, raking in Sh7.3 million in gate collections.

That encounter ended in a goalless draw, but the financial success highlighted the importance of equal access for both sets of supporters.

Gor Mahia, the designated hosts this time around, had initially proposed to stage the match at either the Nyayo National Stadium or Kasarani.

However, both venues are currently under renovation in preparation for the delayed 2024 African Nations Championship and the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which Kenya is set to co-host alongside Uganda and Tanzania.

Ingwe fans have pledged to create a sea of blue and white at the Homa Bay venue.

“A derby is usually a must-watch for football fanatics, and we plan to paint Raila Odinga Stadium in the white and blue colours of Ingwe on Monday,” said Francis Liboyi, the Nairobi West branch chairman and also president of the Kenya Football Fans Federation in the same instance.

“We want to turn up in large numbers to create an atmosphere that will push our players to display good football and beat Gor in Homa Bay.”

With Gor Mahia holding the upper hand in recent derbies, Monday’s clash offers Ingwe a chance to rewrite recent history.

AFC Leopards last triumphed over their rivals in 2023 with a 2-1 victory and have not tasted the same inthe last five outings.
