Ilkay Gundogan, the influential German midfielder currently with Barcelona, has announced his decision to retire from international football.
The 33-year-old’s announcement came shortly after Germany’s quarter-final exit from Euro 2024 and amid ongoing speculation about his future at the club level.
Gundogan's decision to retire marks the end of an illustrious international career spanning over a decade.

nach einigen Wochen Bedenkzeit bin ich zu dem Entschluss gekommen, dass es an der Zeit ist, meine Nationalmannschaftskarriere zu beenden.

Reflecting on his decision, Gundogan stated, “After a period of reflection, I believe it’s time to step away from international duty. Leading Germany at Euro 2024 was a profound honor, and I’m proud of the contribution I made to our national team. Despite the disappointment of our early exit, I cherish the memories and experiences I’ve gained over the years.”
The midfielder, who amassed 82 caps and served as Germany’s captain, expressed his fatigue from the rigorous demands of both club and international football.
“The physical and mental toll of constant matches has been significant,” Gundogan admitted. “I feel it’s the right moment to focus on my club career and personal well-being. I remain an ardent supporter of the German national team and am hopeful for their future success.”
Barcelona's coach, Hansi Flick echoed Gundogan's sentiments, describing the midfielder as a crucial asset to the team.
Hansi Flick praised Gundogan’s leadership and technical prowess, saying, “Ilkay’s decision to retire from international football is a significant loss for Germany, but it’s a move that reflects his dedication to maintaining peak performance at the club level. His experience and vision have been invaluable to us at Barcelona. We respect his choice and fully support him as he shifts focus to his role here with us.”
Flick also highlighted Gundogan’s influence on the squad, noting, “Ilkay brings an exceptional level of professionalism and insight. While we will miss his contributions to the German team, we are fortunate to have him fully committed to our goals at Barcelona.”
Gundogan is among the players that we dread the day they would decide to hang their boots.
While he focuses on club football, let us enjoy the time that this wonderful footballer will grace our sights.
