The 2024 German champions, Bayer Leverkusen, began their new era under Erik ten Hag in the worst possible way – a 5-1 drubbing at the hands of Flamengo's youth team!

Former Manchester United coach Erik ten Hag kicked off his pre-season with new club Bayer Leverkusen in the worst possible fashion.

Leverkusen started pre-season in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil with a match against Flamengo. However, they didn't face the first team, but rather their Under-20 squad.

Flamengo recently proved their mettle against European competition at the Club World Cup where they defeated Chelsea 3-1 and gave Bayern Munich a tough match, eventually losing 4-2.

However, no one would have expcted what happened when their youth team took on the 2023-24 Bundesliga champions. Their under-20 team thrashed Leverkusen 5-1 to leave Ten Hag facing questions over whether he will have an extended stay at the German club, having replaced Xabi Alonso in May.

Ten Hag shuffled his lineup, starting players like Victor Boniface, Amine Adli, Jonas Hofmann, Arthur, and new signing Mark Flekken. Lukas Hradecky, Edmond Tapsoba, Alejandro Grimaldo, Nathan Tella, Robert Andrich, Granit Xhaka, and Exequiel Palacios all came off the bench in the second half.

Even with such names on the field, the best Leverkusen could manage was a single consolation goal at 5-0 down.

Loran and Arthur's own goals gave Flamengo's under-20 side a 2-0 lead within the first 10 minutes. Conclave and Leao extended the lead before halftime, and Souza made it 5-0 in the 54th minute. A late goal from Mitchel Bakker in the 71st minute only slightly softened the blow.

That left Ten Hag red-faced and while it is just pre-season, losing in such a manner to a youth team from Brazil raises questions over their prepardness and whether the former United boss will manage the pressure that comes with the job.

Leverkusen's next pre-season match is against German side Bochum on July 27 when improvements are expected from Ten Hag's team.
