Football Kenya Federation has given its account of what led to the decision to allow Shabana vs Gor Mahia to go on despite chaos that left over 70 fans injured.

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has come up with measures aimed at avoiding future chaos in stadiums following the violence witnessed at Gusii Stadium last Sunday.

Events of last weekend are still fresh in the minds of Kenyan football fans after Gor Mahia and Shabana supporters clashed ahead of their FKF Premier League match at Gusii Stadium, leading to injuries to 72 fans.

That has seen FKF come under fire for allowing such a high-risk match to be played at a small venue like Gusii Stadium but the federation has defended itself, saying the match was allowed to proceed after officials on the ground were satisfied with everything.

FKF Says it Not to blame For Gusii Stadium Violence

“Every match day, there is a match commissioner and they have rules and regulations they need to follow. If they see it fit, the match commences and if they do not see it fit for a match to commence, it does not,” FKF CEO Harold Ndege said on Tuesday.

“The federation officials to do not interfere with roles and responsibilities of other officials,” he added, exonerating FKF from claims made by Gor Mahia that a federation official from Nairobi okayed the match to proceed.

“So far reports I have received from the referee and match commissioner is that they had a meeting for the match to commence and the match commenced and ended, the more the reason why during the match, there were no incidences of violence. The incidents were pre the match,” said Ndege.

Ndege also says FKF had been satisfied by the assurances provided by host team Shabana before Gusii Stadium was cleared to host the match.

“The home team provided security and stewardship plan and report and how they were going to induct the event and it was agreed the match could be hosted without any situation,” he added.

How Does FKF Plan to Curb Future Chaos?

However, after the bitter lessons learnt on Sunday, FKF has now instituted measures to avoid future chaos at match venues.

There will now be an enhanced fans education programme aimed at sensitizing supporters on the need to be on their best behaviour, a steward training programme and development of a security policy to guide management of security at stadiums countrywide.

There will also be increased oversight on matchdays with FKF set to supervise arrangement of high-risk matches, alongside the home teams, while there will be further emphasis on stadium inspection and club licensing to ensure full compliance.

FKF will also collaborate with police to put in place a multi-agency team to help combat incidents of hooliganism
