FKF President Hussein Mohammed has clarified stance on selection of Harambee Stars players for the 2024 CHAN tournament as head coach Benni McCarthy faces heat.

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed has firmly distanced himself and the federation’s secretariat from the recent Harambee Stars squad selection ahead of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

The continental showpiece is scheduled to be jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania in August.

His remarks come amid growing scrutiny surrounding the provisional 30-man squad unveiled by head coach Benni McCarthy.

The South African tactician, appointed earlier this year, has sparked debate among fans and pundits especially for some of his omissions.

Speaking at a Harambee Stars pre-CHAN media conference held on July 9 at Stadion Hotel in Kasarani, Mohammed addressed public concerns over favoritism and federation interference in national team affairs.

"I think the one thing many Kenyans have been concerned about in the past is the selection of teams," said Mohammed.

"I want to again reiterate that the team selection is purely at the discretion of the national coach and his technical bench."

He emphasized the clear distinction between the administrative role of the federation and the technical independence granted to McCarthy and his staff.

"The secretariat of the federation, including myself, have absolutely no say in how the players are selected, and we want to keep it that way," he said.

"There's complete separation of powers in that regard. We give this technical bench all the leeway to choose the players that they want to use and to participate in the tournament," he continued.

"So at the end of the day, we have given them complete freedom to make that choice, and for them, it's now to deliver on the pitch."

Provisional Squad Raises Eyebrows

Benni McCarthy’s 30-man provisional squad features a blend of experience and youth, with key names such as midfielders Mohammed Bajaber and Austin Odhiambo making the list.

Defensively, the coach has leaned on the reliability of seasoned campaigners like Abud Omar and Gor Mahia’s stalwart pairing of Alphonce Omija and Sylvester Owino.

However, not all reactions have been positive.

One of the biggest talking points has been the exclusion of Shabana FC’s standout performer Bryan Michira, whose impressive club season had many expecting him to earn a national call-up.

With the final CHAN squad expected to be trimmed down in the coming weeks, pressure continues to mount on McCarthy to strike the right balance and silence the doubters.

For now, the FKF boss has made it clear that the responsibility and accountability rests squarely with the Harambee Starstechnical bench.
