In the halftime, Kenya held a narrow lead as stadium chaos and ticketing issues overshadowed the CHAN 2024 match atmosphere.

Football fans stormed into Kasarani Stadium on Sunday afternoon after hours of waiting in long queues ahead of the highly anticipated African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024) match between Kenya and DR Congo.

What was meant to be a celebration of football quickly turned chaotic as thousands of supporters, frustrated by delays and ticketing issues, broke through barricades and overwhelmed security forces stationed at the entrances.

Video footage by Citizen Digital captured the tense moments as fans pushed through checkpoints, with some sections of the perimeter fencing collapsing under the pressure of the crowd.

Security personnel appeared outnumbered and struggled to control the surging masses as fans entered through various sections of the stadium. Despite the scenes of disorder outside, order was quickly restored inside the stadium, where security remained tight as fans filled the 48,000-seater arena in anticipation of the football showdown.

Earlier in the day, reports had surfaced of growing discontent among citizens regarding the ticketing process.

Many complained about the difficulty in purchasing tickets, with some accusing the authorities of distributing tickets to politically-aligned supporters in an attempt to avoid dissent or anti-government chants during the match. This, fans argued, added to the frustration that fueled the breach at the gates, particularly at the infamously chaotic Gate 6, where a large group is said to have overpowered guards and forced their way inside.

Nicholas Musonye, the head of the local organizing committee, dismissed claims of mismanagement, stating that all tickets had been sold out since Monday evening. However, this did little to quell public anger as the crowd outside grew impatient under the hot afternoon sun.

Inside the stadium, the match itself delivered high drama, with Harambee Stars going into halftime leading 1-0 thanks to a stoppage-time strike from Austin Odhiambo in the 45+1 minute.

DR Congo came close to equalizing just before the break, but Kenya’s Alphonse Omija made a heroic goal-line clearance to preserve the home side’s lead.

Halftime statistics reflected Kenya’s dominance in possession (64.9%) and pass accuracy (80%), but DR Congo had more attempts on goal (6 shots to Kenya’s 3). Despite the physical nature of the contest, with DR Congo committing 10 fouls, only one yellow card was shown—against a Kenyan player.

Fans have now settled and the tension is easing inside the stadium, attention has turned to the second half, as Harambee Stars look to hold on to their lead in what is shaping up to be a memorable CHAN 2024 encounter.
