Tyron Kariuki, who shone for Kenya at the U18 Boys' Championships in Kisumu in November 2023, has explained why it is a special feeling representing the national team regardless of level.

Former Kenya U-18 star Tyron Kariuki has reveled in the ‘“special feeling” of representing the country internationally as he continues gaining more experience in his budding career.

Kariuki, who also represented Kenya at U20 level, was one of the biggest shining lights at the 2023 CECAFA U18 Boys’ Championships held in Kisumu and Kakamega, dazzling many with his excellent one v one sense and creativity from the flanks.

The side, which also included other exciting players like Manzur Okwaro, Amos Wanjala, Aldrine Kibet and Stanley Wilson, reached the final of the tournament, where they were unfortunately bundled out by Uganda 2-1.

Since then, Kariuki has gone on to sign for KCB, a club he hopes will open more doors for him as he attempts to advance his career and try and break into the senior set up one day.

But even as he prepares to one day make his maiden senior team bow, Kariuki has fondly looked back at his time especially with the U18s, opening up on how playing in international colours made him proud.

Reflecting on his international journey, the youngster spoke with pride about what it meant to wear the national colours.

‘I Had Dreamt of It All My Life’ - Kariuki

“It was one of my proudest moments representing the country at the CECAFA U18 Championships in Kisumu in 2023,” Kariuki said on The Tiki Taka Show.

“I had dreamt of it all my life, so when it came to fruition, I thanked God. It was a very good ride alongside my fellow U18 stars.”

Kariuki’s tenure with the U20s was not as glamorous individually, even if the side did manage to get to the final of the CECAFA U20 qualifiers against Tanzania in 2024 which earned them a ticket to the 2025 U20 AFCON.

He struggled with injuries during qualifiers, being restricted to just two substitute appearances, before being left out for the squad that took part in the continental showpiece in Egypt.

However, Kariuki is forever grateful for that privilege he has enjoyed at junior level so far.

“I have enjoyed it because it is every footballer’s dream to represent their country and play for the national team one day.”

Kariuki revealed that before joining KCB in February 2025, he had also been in talks with other clubs -incuding Kariobangi Sharls  but ultimately chose the bankers due to their clear vision and approach.

“They were not clear with what they wanted,” he said when explaining why he chose KCB. “I was willing to sign because I trained with them hoping something would happen.

“I’m sure they (Kariobangi Sharks) also wanted me because of my profile, but KCB came calling quicker and told me what they wanted. That’s why I signed with them.”

Still only a youngster, Kariuki’s blend of pace, skill, and composure continues to attract attention from scouts, and he remains hopeful that his breakthrough at senior level is just around the corner.
