Enzo Maresca has defended his decision to bench Reece James in Chelsea's Europa Conference League final.

Chelsea captain Reece James was surprisingly dropped from the starting 11 in their match against Real Betis in the final of the Europa Conference League on Wednesday night.

Reece James was later added in the second half, where Chelsea made a difference by scoring four goals. Real Betis were off to a great start, scoring through Abde Ezzalzouli in the ninth minute.

In the second half, Enzo Fernandez started Chelsea’s scoring spree in the 65th minute before Nicolas Jackson and Jadon Sancho came through in the 70th and 83rd minutes. Moises Caicedo added the fourth in the 91st minute.

Reece James revealed that it was disappointing not to be included in the starting 11, noting that he is always looking forward to starting the games, but Enzo Maresca has his reasons why.

"It's devastating to find out you're not starting a final. I want to play every game, but it was the manager's decision,” Reece James told TNT Sports.

"I needed to accept it and move on and come on if I was needed. In the first half, we were very flat. We needed a reaction in the second half, and we got it."

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca revealed that the decision to drop Reece James was for the captain’s good since he was protecting him.

Enzo Maresca revealed that Reece James remains one of the top players, but he only needs some managing.

"I promise you, I would always start Reece, but I'm trying to protect him. He's played more games this season than in the last two,” Maresca said.

"He's happy, he's a top player. He's like Cole Palmer, but we need to manage him. When I brought him on, he said not to worry and that we'd win the game."

Chelsea capped off a thrilling Europa Conference League final with a dominant second-half performance under Enzo Maresca.

Despite initial setbacks, the Blues rallied to secure a convincing 4-1 win, affirming their impressive form this season.

Their resurgence in the Premier League has also not gone unnoticed, with a strong finish securing them a coveted spot in next season’s UEFA Champions League. They finished an impressive fourth with 69 points in the Premier League.
