The Kenyan striker scored four goals as Al Duhail dismantled Al Shamal at Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium in Doha.

Harambee Stars skipper Michael Olunga was on fire as Al Duhail SC won the Qatar Stars League (QSL) title after an emphatic 5-2 win over Al Shamal on Monday.

Olunga scored four to help his side to the big win that ensured they became champions of the league for the first time since 2020.

Meanwhile, Al Duhail broke the deadlock in the seventh minute when Almoez Ali scored with an assist from Naam Tae-Hee.

Olunga added Al Duhail’s second in the 21st minute after being set up by Mohammed Musa, to take a giant step towards defending the Golden Boot award.

He scored his second of the game from the penalty spot in the 32nd minute, before a third one came in the 35th minute, with Tae-Hee providing another assist in the encounter.

Al Shamal denied Olunga’s side a clean sheet when Matias Nani scored from the spot in the 48th minute.

The former Thika United star kept fighting and added the fourth in the 52nd minute, and this time around, Bassam Al Rawi was the assist provider.

With four goals from this pulsating encounter, Olunga took his tally to 22, while his closest Golden Boot rival, Omar Al Somah of Al Arabi, managed 19 goals.

This is the first league title with Al Duhail for the former Gor Mahia striker. After winning the title and retaining the Golden Boot, Olunga’s star continues to shine in a different football territory.

He joined the Middle Eastern club in 2021 after equally impressing in Japan’s J2 and J1 Leagues. With 27 goals, he played a major role as Kashiwa Reysol secured a ticket back to the J1 League.

In the J1 League, he won the Golden Boot when he edged his then close rival Kashima Antlers’ Evaraldo as he established himself as one of the key foreign players for Reysol.

In his last season with the Japanese outfit, he also won the Most Valuable Player award; the first such achievement by an African.

In November 2021, he added another badge to his career when he won the AFC Champions League’s Golden Boot after scoring nine goals despite the fact that Al Duhail were eliminated from the group stage.
