Nairobi City Stars CEO Patrick Korir has explained what is behind his team’s record run in the FKF Premier League that has seen them move to second place on the table

Nairobi City Stars CEO Patrick Korir has revealed how the team’s good run in the FKF Premier League has left everyone at the club surprised.

Simba wa Nairobi are the most in-form team in the league after Saturday’s 3-0 victory over FC Talanta saw them make it six straight wins that have enabled them to move to second on the log with 30 points, seven behind leaders Gor Mahia.

For a team that survived relegation in the final weeks of last season, Korir says their run has left them buzzing but he credits it to good recruitment, especially in defence.

“We realised our problem areas and fixed them,” Korir told Pulse Sports. “We conceded a lot last season and fixed the defence so everything now is built from the back.”

“Once we changed the combinations at the back, everything fell in place because up front, we did not have a problem. We had different scorers and that is what is happening even this season.”

City Stars signed nine new players at the start of the season, goalkeepers Julius Ombacho from Luanda Villa and Edwin Mukolwe from Bidco United.

Also joining Simba wa Nairobi were center-backs Wycliffe Omondi from Migori Youth and Sosthenes Idah from Polisi Tanzania while defensive midfielder Brian Omondi Mzee (Kibera Black Stars) and wingers Robinson Asenwa (Vapor Sports), as well as Gilbert Abala (Busia Sugar FC), also joined.

Korir says the new players have integrated well with those they found at the club, helping coach Nicholas Muyoti build a strong squad that has now surpassed their target for this season.

“Our target was top 10 but we are punching above our weight and even surprising ourselves,” he added.

“Last season, we had 11 points at this point but now, we have 17 more. We have won six straight games which is a new record because the best we had was five straight wins. Kudos to the technical bench.”

Korir will be hoping that his side does not relent especially in a season when teams that were tipped to do better than them such as Kenya Police, Tusker FC, and AFC Leopards are struggling.

However, City Stars could be forced to complete the rest of the campaign with a new man in the dugout as Muyoti is reported to have agreed to join struggling Shabana.
