The Blues lead the race to sign Lorient’s Arthur Avom, the ‘new Yaya Toure’, amid Premier League competition.

Chelsea have emerged as frontrunners in the race to sign highly-rated Cameroonian midfielder Arthur Avom, dubbed the ‘new Yaya Toure’, following a breakthrough season with French side Lorient.

The 20-year-old has caught the eye of several Premier League clubs, with West Ham and Aston Villa also sending scouts to monitor his performances in Ligue 2.

But Chelsea appear to be leading the chase for the dynamic midfielder, as they continue to invest heavily in emerging young talent.

According to The Sun, Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has identified Avom as a top midfield target for the summer. The Blues are reportedly keen to secure his signature before rivals make a concrete move, with plans already in place to potentially loan him to their sister club Strasbourg to continue his development.

Avom has enjoyed a stellar campaign in France, registering two goals and five assists in 30 league appearances and playing a key role in Lorient’s promotion push.

Despite interest from abroad, Lorient are hopeful of tying the midfielder down to a contract extension.

Having made his international debut for Cameroon at the age of 18, Avom already has two caps to his name and is widely seen as one of the brightest midfield prospects in African football.

His style of play—marked by strong running, precise passing, and a powerful shot—has drawn inevitable comparisons to Ivory Coast and Manchester City legend Yaya Toure.

While Chelsea’s initial plan may involve a loan move to Strasbourg, it remains to be seen whether Avom would prefer an immediate jump to the Premier League.

Bournemouth, who also have ties with Lorient through shared ownership, are said to be weighing up a move, which could complicate matters further.

Chelsea’s interest in Avom reflects their ongoing strategy to build a squad filled with youthful, high-ceiling talents.

In recent years, the club has spent heavily on players under 23, with mixed results, but the belief remains strong in their long-term vision.
