Sundowns loanee Neo Maema explains his decision to join Tanzania's Simba SC, revealing why a move abroad was preferable to Kaizer Chiefs.

Mamelodi Sundowns loanee Neo Maema has finally detailed the circumstances behind his exit from Chloorkop, confirming he deliberately rejected concrete interest from Kaizer Chiefs to secure a season-long loan move to Tanzanian giants Simba SC.

The creative midfielder found himself on the fringes at Sundowns under head coach Miguel Cardoso, who has been clear about his preference for working with a more compact and streamlined squad.

His departure was part of a broader exodus that saw several high-profile names exit the club, including Sipho Mbule, Thembinkosi Lorch, Rivaldo Coetzee, and Lebohang Maboe.

Before his move to Dar es Salaam was sealed, Maema was a prime target for Kaizer Chiefs, who were actively looking to reinforce their squad ahead of the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season.

Speaking on the Soccer Beat Podcast, Maema verified that Amakhosi were in the running, but his mind was already set on a new challenge abroad.

“I knew about Chiefs’ interest – my agent informed me – but I sat down with my family and decided I needed a completely new environment,” he explained.

“For me, that couldn’t be another club in South Africa. If anything came up, it had to be outside the country.”

Continental Ambition Trumps Local Move

The decision to bypass a domestic giant like Chiefs highlights Maema's specific career ambitions. The midfielder revealed that the offer from Simba SC came at the perfect moment, aligning perfectly with his personal goals while he was on national duty with Bafana Bafana for the CHAN tournament.

The primary motivation, he stated, was the opportunity to remain a competitor in Africa's premier club competition, the CAF Champions League—a stage on which Simba are regular contenders.

“Simba came with a proposal while I was focused on CHAN, and I felt it made sense. I wanted to compete in the CAF Champions League, push myself this season and maintain a high level. That’s what motivated my decision.”

Adapting to Change in Tanzania

Upon arriving at Simba, Maema reunited with former Sundowns teammate Rushine De Reuck and began his tenure under the guidance of South African coach Fadlu Davids.

However, in a twist reflective of the fast-paced nature of continental football, Davids has since departed to take the head coaching job at Moroccan powerhouse Raja Casablanca.

Maema, having sought a new environment to prove his worth, now faces the challenge of adapting to a new technical team as he aims to make his season-long loan a success.
