Benson Omala: Gor Mahia striker in tough battle to avoid back-to-back Golden Boot heartbreaks

Gor Mahia forward Benson Omala can hardly rest on his laurels in the Golden Boot chase as rivals are hot on his heels with six games remaining.

Gor Mahia striker Benson Omala is still in a tough fight for the FKF Premier League Golden Boot even after scoring a brace last weekend.

Omala now has 14 goals following his two strikes as Gor Mahia beat Murang’a Seal 3-2 on Saturday but he is just one goal ahead of Kenya Police striker Tito Okello.

The Gor Mahia forward has not managed to hit the heights of last season, when he netted a record equaling 26, and had managed 25 goals by May, but he is still in contention for his first Golden Boot gong after missing it in 2022-23 to then Kenya Police man Elvis Rupia who scored a record 27.

Omala will be hoping that lightning does not strike twice as it is a Police man hot on his heels yet again.

Okello netted the equaliser as his team came from behind to win 2-1 away to Kakamega Homeboyz on Sunday and has shown great consistency, scoring five goals in his last four league games, including a brace a piece in matches against Sofapaka and FC Talanta.

It means Omala cannot rest on his laurels if he has to end the season with an individual accolade besides the league title which looks destined to Gor Mahia for a second straight season.

Meanwhile, Tusker’s Erick Kapaito is not far off as he has 10 goals to his name so far. Kapaito could not increase his tally as Tusker beat Nzoia Sugar on Monday and he will have to look over his shoulders as Gor Mahia’s Austin Odhiambo and Francis Kahiro of Bandari are closing in.

Odhiambo, who opened the scoring for Gor Mahia on Saturday, took his tally for the season to nine, a good return for the ever-green midfielder, and he is now level with Kahiro.

Vincent Owino of Nairobi City Stars, who has seven goals, will hope to get closer as well when his side face Ulinzi Stars in a rescheduled match on Tuesday.
