Teams set to feature at the delayed 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations are guaranteed more millions after CAF doubled the winners’ prize for this year’s edition.

The 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations will kick off on Saturday July 5 in Morocco with 12 teams participating and there is a big prize on offer.

Confederation of African Football (CAF) has doubled the winner’s prize while the total prize pool has gone up by 45 per cent, making the tournament more lucrative.

Starting from this year’s tournament, winners of WAFCON will earn $1 million (Ksh130 million) an increase from the previous prize of $500,000 (Ksh64.7 million), which is now the runners-up prize.

Third place will now attract $350,000 (Ksh45.3 million) while the team that will finish fourth will walk away with $300,000 (Ksh39 million).

At WAFCON, each of the eight quarter-finalists will take home $200,000 (Ksh26 million) as each side that finish third in their group receive $150,000 (Ksh19.4 million).

Fourth place in the group will be awarded $125,000 (Ksh16.2 million) which will be the lowest amount at WAFCON 2024.

“The 100% increase in the prize money of the winner of the TotalEnergies CAF WAFCON Morocco 2024 and the 45% total increase in the prize money of this competition should contribute to the increase of the salaries of women football players, coaches and employees,” said CAF president Patrice Motsepe.

“The quality and standard of women’s football in Africa is consistently improving and is world class. We are excited about the substantial increase in the number of fans, broadcasting viewers and sponsors in the TotalEnergies CAF WAFCON Morocco 2024. This competition is going to be enormously successful.”

A total of 12 teams are set to grace WAFCON being defending champions South Africa, record winners Nigeria, hosts Morocco, DR Congo, Senegal, Zambia, Algeria, Botswana, Tunisia, Ghana, Mali and Tanzania.
