This was the first time Al Duhail played in an AFC Champions League semi-final.
Harambee Stars captain and Al Duhail striker, Michael Olunga has admitted that Sunday's 7-0 loss to Al Hilal in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Champions League semifinal was a sad moment but also claimed to be proud of his team despite the defeat.
Al Duhail eliminated Al Shabab in the quarterfinal but could not overcome the talented defending champions, Al Hilal to reach the tournament's final.
The Qatari side fell to goals by Nigerian international Odion Ighalo, who found the back of the net four times; Mali's Moussa Marega netted a brace and Salem Al-Dawsari scored the other goal for the Saudi Arabian giants.
"Tough one to take. Wanted to go to the final, but this was not our day. Still proud of this far, Al Duhail has come and achieved a semifinal spot for the first time in the club's history. Build from there and focus on the upcoming fixture," Olunga posted on his Facebook page.
Al Duhail, the Qatar Stars League (QSL) leaders, appeared in the semifinals for the first time courtesy of Olunga's brace against Al Shabab in a match played at Al Thumama Stadium on Thursday 23 February.
Defending champions Al Hilal will take on Urawa Red Diamonds in the AFC Champions League 2022 final.
Al Hilal will host the final's first leg in Riyadh on Saturday 29 April 29 before traveling to Japan to take on Urawa at the Saitama Stadium on Saturday 6 May.
Urawa Red Diamonds booked their spot in the final by beating South Korea's Jeonbuk Hyundai in their last-four clash last year.
Al Duhail will now shift focus to the Qatar Stars League where they are scheduled to face Al Arabi in a top-of-the-table clash on Thursday 2 March 2.
