Kenya's super middleweight champion Daniel Wanyonyi is set to headline 'Shujaa Wa Mashujaa' boxing event in Meru.

Kenya's super middleweight champion Daniel Wanyonyi is set for a historic battle against USA's Kamron Humphrey in a thrilling eight-round World Alliance Boxing Association (WABA) duel, aptly named 'Shujaa Wa Mashujaa'.

This landmark event is scheduled to take place on March 16 at Kinoru Stadium, Meru County, marking a significant moment in the world of professional boxing.

Wanyonyi, with a record of 29 wins, 15 losses, and 2 draws, is gearing up to leverage home advantage against Humphrey, who enters the ring with a record of three wins, two losses, and no draws.

The anticipation for this bout extends beyond the borders of Kenya, as it encapsulates the spirit of international competition and sportsmanship.

“I am fighting at home against a foreign boxer, so I have the home support to my advantage. This is a great chance to fight with a boxer from America. It will be a good moment,” Wanyonyi shared, radiating confidence ahead of the bout, as per Citizen TV.

Adding to the spectacle, two-time Commonwealth Games champion Lee McAllister from the United Kingdom will also grace the event, taking on Tanzania's Amos Mwamakula in another eagerly awaited match.

McAllister, a former International Boxing Organisation light-welterweight champion, is one of the high-profile boxers slated to battle in these title fights.

Reuben Ndolo, president of the Kenya Professional Boxing Commission, expressed his pride in the tournament's inclusivity, particularly the decision to feature female boxers.

“We are very proud of this tournament. We thank our partners for coming on board, and we look forward to seeing similar events in the future,” Ndolo stated, highlighting the event's significance in promoting boxing across genders.

The 'Shujaa Wa Mashujaa' tournament not only serves as a platform for showcasing boxing talent but also carries a charitable purpose.

Proceeds from the event will support the Greenland School For Girls in Meru, offering teenage mothers a second chance at education. This charitable angle adds a layer of social responsibility to the excitement of the fights.

Edward Mendy, fight promoter and Gambian-American, emphasised the importance of hosting the event in Meru, a region previously untouched by major boxing tournaments.

“I believe involving Mukami (Charity) in the fight will inspire girls in Meru to embrace sports. Also, holding the fights in Kenya is so special to me because Kenya is the land of my in-laws,” Mendy remarked, shedding light on the personal connection and the event's potential impact on local communities.

The one-day event is not just a showcase of boxing talent but a celebration of sports' power to unite, inspire, and make a difference in people's lives.

With over 20 pugilists from across the continent and beyond set to compete, the 'Shujaa Wa Mashujaa' tournament promises to be a memorable spectacle for boxing enthusiasts and a beacon of hope for the beneficiaries of its charitable cause.
