Four men who visited marathoner Kelvin Kiptum's home days before his death have explained their purpose to authorities amid ongoing investigations and family concerns.

The four men who visited the residence of the late marathon runner Kelvin Kiptum days before his untimely death in a road accident have finally disclosed their reasons for the visit.

They were questioned at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) office in Kaptagat on Wednesday morning following concerns raised by Kiptum’s family about their unexpected appearance.

According to the men, their visit was strictly business-related, focusing on a significant contract between Kiptum and a Chinese company worth Sh45 million.

"My clients had a fruitful discussion with Kiptum’s family. They were warmly received by his parents and widow, who even offered them food. The meeting lasted three hours," Kipyegon Lagat, the lawyer representing the four men, stated.

The heart of the matter was a deal Kiptum had signed with the Chinese firm to supply him with sports equipment for the Chicago marathon.

Allegations suggest Kiptum was reconsidering the agreement, preferring to use a different brand, which led to the visit aimed at negotiating a resolution.

The visitors conveyed the company’s preference for fulfilling the contract over engaging in a legal dispute.

Elgeyo Marakwet County Criminal Investigations Officer Joshua Chelal provided an update on the situation.

“They sent some four men to negotiate if they could be compensated or given another opportunity to supply more equipments for forthcoming Rotterdam race," he said.

Chalel reassured the public and the grieving family that the visit had been thoroughly investigated, acknowledging that the men were acquainted with some family members and had indeed met with Kiptum regarding the contractual dispute.

The initial suspicion surrounding the visit stemmed from concerns voiced by Kiptum’s father, Samson Cheruiyot, who was alarmed by the presence of four unknown individuals at their home in Chepsamo village, mere days before his son's tragic accident.

Cheruiyot's call for an investigation into the matter led to the identification of the visitors and the detention of their vehicle at Kaptagat Police Station.
