Jamaican sprint legend Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce has termed it a big honour to have received the 2023 Alumni Exemplar Sports Award from the University of the West Indies.

Fraser-Pryce was recognised at the university’s 75th Anniversary celebration at the weekend for her work as the founder of the Pocket Rocket Foundation, a non-profit organisation that provides funding to deserving student-athletes.

It was the second award for the three-time Olympic gold medallist adding onto her first Laureus World Sports Award for Sportswoman of the Year and another feather from the University of West Indies which also honoured her with a doctorate degree in 2016.

“I am honoured to receive the 2023 Alumni Exemplar Sports Award from the University of the West Indies at their 75th Anniversary celebration,” Fraser-Pryce posted on social media.

“My career has always been rooted in sports and education, and as I go into another year, I'm committed to continue my work with the Pocket Rocket Foundation to ensure students are ready to rise.”

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce had a rough start to her 2023 season when she withdrew from two competitions due to a family emergency and then a knee injury.

She, however, made up for the lost time when she featured at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary where she won silver and bronze.

Fraser-Pryce won bronze in the 100m, finishing behind Sha'Carri Richardson and fellow Jamaican Shericka Jackson. She sustained a hamstring injury in her 4x100 final, but showed incredible grit to continue until the baton-change, leading Jamaica to a silver.

The 36-year-old will shift her focus to the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics with hopes of winning another gold.
