The coach believes Faith Kipyegon's smooth transition is already assured because her current training progress shows she is built to succeed over the marathon distance.

Patrick Sang has explained why he believes Faith Kipyegon will thrive in the marathon, citing the milestones she is hitting in training and drawing on the success of Hellen Obiri and Sifan Hassan.

Hellen Obiri and Sifan Hassan were once formidable 1500m runners, just like Faith Kipyegon and have since emerged to be some of the best marathon runners in the world.

Sifan Hassan, for instance, won the London Marathon on her debut in 2023 before shocking a strong field to also claim top honours at the Chicago Marathon the same year.

In 2024, she won the marathon at the Paris Olympic Games before also claiming top honours at the Sydney Marathon in 2025. On her part, Hellen Obiri has also been impressive, winning the Boston Marathon twice, in 2023 and 2024.

She also claimed a bronze medal at the Paris Olympic Games before being crowned the 2025 New York City Marathon champion.

Patrick Sang on Having a Strong Belief About Faith Kipyegon Dominating the Marathon

Patrick Sang suggested that other leading women, including those who have already stepped up to longer distances, have shown there is space for Faith Kipyegon to compete there as well.

The coach noted that he is curious to see how the 1500m world record holder performs in that arena. Patrick Sang explained that, when he considers Faith Kipyegon and the work they have done together since 2019, the early phases of the season were designed to address different aspects of her development.

He added that she joined his programme as a world-class athlete, but his approach was to treat her as a completely new project rather than relying on what she had done before.

“People have gone ahead of her, especially the female runners, you've mentioned the names Hellen Obiri and Sifan Hassan, and it's a clear indicator that there's room there, there's a place for Faith there, and we would want to see also what she can do in that territory,” Patrick Sang shared in an interview with Citius Mag.

Patrick Sang said that the method applies to every athlete who joins his camp from another setup, as he prefers not to form opinions based on their past.

He explained that he identified certain areas that required strengthening and focused on developing those. According to him, that work opened two pathways.

It prepared Faith Kipyegon for a potential move to longer distances and also reduced the risk of injuries by building a stronger foundation.

“That's what I do with all the athletes that come to cross over because I don't want to prejudice my mind. What I realised was that some gaps needed to be improved, and that's what I improved, and it gave us two possibilities: the possibility to move to the longer distance and to mitigate what we were looking at, the prevention of injuries by setting a very strong base,” he added.

Patrick Sang explained that success does not begin at the tape but at the very beginning of the process.

He said that with Faith Kipyegon, the team focused on establishing a wide foundation for the season, and the progress has been evident.

He noted that her current training load is a strong sign that she is capable of matching what other former 1500m specialists have achieved at longer distances.

“So, the winning is not at the finish line. The winning is at the start of the whole journey. So where we started with Faith, we have started building a broad base towards the season,” he said.

“We are getting better. Even the volume of the distance that we're doing now is giving us a good indicator that she is capable of doing what the athletes who used to do 1500 like herself are doing.”

As the marathon talks continue intensifying, Patrick Sang is confident that with all the work they have put in, Faith Kipyegon will prosper.
