Mikel Arteta Told to Rethink Strategy After Major Arsenal Transfer Blow

Arsenal suffer a major transfer blow as a top attacking target decides to stay at his current club on reduced terms.

Arsenal are facing a significant setback in their summer transfer plans as Leroy Sane edges closer to committing his future to Bayern Munich.

Despite concrete interest from the Gunners, Sane has chosen loyalty over a bigger payday, preparing to extend his stay at the Allianz Arena with a new three-year contract.

The German winger’s current deal was due to expire this summer which sparked hopes among Arsenal fans that Mikel Arteta could lure the talented forward back to the Premier League.

Both had previously worked together during their time at Manchester City, the Arsenal boss was believed to be keen on reuniting with Sane.

However, according to reports from Bild, Sane has convinced Bayern’s hierarchy he is worthy of a fresh deal.

"There is still no decision on Leroy," Bayern's sporting director Max Eberl said back in March as per Mirror.

"With his current performances, he is providing arguments in favor of a new contract. We have to discuss: Which contracts do we extend and how does it fit into the overall constellation? Leroy, like everyone else, has a chance of getting a new contract."

Sane is set to accept a reduced salary package of €10million plus €5million in bonuses (£8.53m+£4.27m), a noticeable drop from his current €15million+€5million (£13.8m+£4.27m) earnings.

The 29-year-old, who has scored 11 goals in 41 appearances this season, has shown great energy that Bayern are hopeful will continue into next season.

The deal, while agreed in principle, also contains an understanding that if Sane continues to impress, fresh negotiations could be opened within 12 months, potentially boosting his terms further.

Not everyone was convinced Sane would reach an agreement with the German champions. Former Bayern, Liverpool, and Newcastle midfielder Dietmar Hamann shared his doubts last month, suggesting Arsenal could have snapped up the winger under the right conditions.

"Leroy Sane's consistency has been a problem with Bayern Munich," Hamann told PokerScout.

"This is why he probably won't get offered a new contract. However, I think if you give him a performance-based contract, you'd have a brilliant player on your hands. That's what I would do. I heard that Arsenal are interested and I wouldn't be surprised if that's the case."

Hamann went on to praise Sane's character despite criticisms often directed at the forward’s body language.

"I think he's a good kid. I think some people read too much into body language, if you look at Lionel Messi's body language you think he's a non-league player. So I don't give too much thought to that, I think he's a good kid. The fact is he's not been consistent enough, but that doesn't mean he won’t be for Arsenal next season."

Arsenal and Mikel Arteta will now need to rethink will be necessary as they look to bolster their attacking options ahead of next season.
