During the National Trials, Kasait finished second behind Kipyegon in the 5,000m.

On a chilly Friday afternoon on July 7, national 5,000m champion Lilian Kasait and double world champion Faith Kipyegon went head-to-head at the Nyayo National Stadium during the ongoing World Championships National Trials.

Kasait was hoping to outshine Kipyegon in the 5,000m race since she is a pro in the race but the 29-year-old proved too strong for her. The two-time world champion cut the tape ahead of Kasait. She clocked 14:53.90 as Kasait timed 14:56.50 to finish the race.

She said competing with Kipyegon was like a dream come true and it’s a great motivation for her going forward.

“The race was good and I’m happy with the time posted because the weather hasn’t been very friendly. I have competed against Kipyegon for the first time and it was a great motivation,” Kasait said, during a post-race interview.

If she makes the cut to the global event scheduled for Budapest, Hungary from August 19 to 27, she revealed that she will go back to the drawing board with her coach and see the areas to work on.

She expressed her willingness to work with Kipyegon and Commonwealth Games champion Beatrice Chebet to bring glory back to Kenya.

“I will go back and discuss with my coach because he has seen how I have run and he knows the areas I need to work on. However, I think I need to work on my speed,” she said.
