Noah Lyles claimed he had Kishane Thompson ‘in his pocket’ despite beating him in their last 100m dash in Silesia, and Gatlin has now revealed what he must do to avoid another Paris situation in Tokyo next September.
American sprint legend Justin Gatlin has revealed what Kishane Thompson must do to beat Noah Lyles at the Tokyo World Championships in September.
Thompson beat Lyles in the first battle between the two since the Paris Olympic Games in August 2024 during the Silesia Diamond League classic, crossing the line in 9.87 seconds, with Noah Lyles settling for second place.

The Diamond League is set to conclude with the season-finale in Zurich on Wednesday and Thursday but why are certain athletes set to pocket more than the others?
Noah Lyles - I Feel I Have Kishane in My Pocket
Lyles finished second but downplayed the loss, first praising Thompson as “a great competitor” before declaring that he still had the Jamaican “in my pocket.”
The 22-year-old Thompson responded boldly: “My pocket’s going to be so far ahead next time, so let’s see.”
Gatlin, a former Olympic and World Champion, dissected the showdown and pinpointed where Thompson must improve.
“When you watch Kishane’s 100 meters, his turnover is amazing. He gets off the blocks well, his drive phase and transition are strong, and he holds his top-end speed.
“That’s both a gift and a curse, because when he maintains that speed, guys like Noah Lyles—who close very fast in the final meters—can still catch him.”

Shericka Jackson and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce are far from peak condition heading into the Tokyo World Championships, which has left both Justin Gatlin and Rodney Green concerned.
Gatlin- This is What Thompson Must Improve on
The American believes Thompson’s camp, led by legendary coach Stephen Francis at MVP Track Club, must sharpen his transition to top speed.
“That’s something Kishane and his team need to address in the coming months: generating more separation when transitioning into top speed. If Noah is close at the finish, it could be déjà vu all over again.”
Gatlin also warned against underestimating Lyles, who has raced sparingly this season but remains deadly.
“The athlete who has made the biggest transformation is Noah Lyles. From his physique to his race strategy, he’s changed everything.

Millions on the Line for Faith Kipyegon, Kishane Thompson and Noah Lyles at World Championships
Faith Kipyegon, Kishane Thompson, and Noah Lyles are among the stars who will be chasing medals and a share of the $8.5 million prize pool at the World Championships.
“ He’s gone from a lean 200-meter runner to a bulkier, more powerful sprinter with top-end speed. He’s not concerned about smaller races like Poland—he’s focused on showing up at the World Championships.
“Even with minimal races, Noah has been able to beat guys who’ve been competing all year. That tells you he has a strategy, and by the time the championships arrive, he’ll be even faster.”*
With their rematch set for Tokyo, the stage is set for a blockbuster sprint duel that could define the next era of 100m sprinting.
