This September, thousands of the world's top athletes will descend on Japan for the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25.

The event will be marking its 20th edition and will feature over 2,000 competitors from approximately 200 countries, all vying for medals across 49 events during nine days of intense action from September 13-21.

Some of the stars headlining the event include 1500m world record holder Faith Kipyegon, Swedish pole vault sensation Mondo Duplantis, triple world champion Noah Lyles, reigning world 400m hurdles champion Femke Bol, and Olympic silver medallist Kishane Thompson, among other stars.

World Championships Prize Money

A total prize pool of $8,498,000 will be distributed among individual medallists and relay teams. A bonus of $100,000 is also on offer for any athlete who breaks a world record.

For individual prize money, the athletes who cross the finish line first will walk away with $70,000, while those who finish second and third will pocket $35,000 and $22,000.

The fourth-place finishers will earn $16,000 while those who cross the finish line in fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth-place will bag $11,000, $7,000, $6,000 and $5,000.

In the relay, the team to cross the finish line first will bag $80,000, while the team that finishes second and third will earn $40,000 and $20,000.

The fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh place finishers stand to win $16,000, $12,000, $8,000 and $6,000. Those who cross the finish line eighth will bag $4,000.

World Athletics announced that there is a total of 147 medals up for grabs across the 49 events. The program features an equal number of disciplines for women and men, 24 each, plus one mixed event.

The disciplines include the 100m, 200m, 400m (women and men), 800m, 1500m, 5000m, 10,000m, 3000m steeplechase (women and men), 100m hurdles (women), 110m hurdles (men), 400m hurdles (women and men), Marathon, 20km race walk, 35km race walk (women and men) and the Jumps (High jump, pole vault, long jump, triple jump (women and men).

Throws (Shot put, discus, hammer, javelin (women and men), Combined Events including heptathlon (women), decathlon (men) and relays, 4x100m (women and men), 4x400m (women, men, and mixed)

Athletes can secure their spot in Tokyo through a dual qualification system based on achieving entry standards or through their position in the world rankings. The qualification window varies by event.

Marathon: November 5, 2023, to May 4, 2025. 10,000m, Race Walks, Combined Events, Relays: February 25, 2024, to August 24, 2025. All other events: August 1, 2024, to August 24, 2025.

For relays, the top 14 teams in each discipline at the World Athletics Relays Guangzhou 25 have already secured their places.

Fans and athletes can monitor the qualification process in real-time using the ‘Road to Tokyo’ online tool, which tracks progress by event and country. However, final team selections are made by each nation's member federation and will be confirmed closer to the championships.

The World Athletics Championships will be streamed live in many territories on the World Athletics website and broadcast globally.
