Akani Simbine revealed he never looked up to Usain Bolt but instead found inspiration in two other Jamaican sprinters.

World Indoor Championships 60m silver medallist Akani Simbine has disclosed why he never looked up to Usain Bolt growing up, as he disclosed his two favourite Jamaican sprinters.

Akani Simbine started his career as a footballer before transitioning to track and field and is eventually conquering the world of sprinting.

The World Relays 4x100m champion revealed that as he made his switch to track and field from football, the fastest man alive, Usain Bolt, was not among his mentors.

He disclosed that Usain Bolt’s body was different from his and that there was not much he could learn from observing the eight-time Olympic champion.

According to Akani Simbine, there were a lot of similarities between him and Yohan Blake and Asafa Powell, and he would always look up to them when he wanted to transition to track and field.

“When I was a young kid, I was into football. I used to look up to the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo before I got into track,” Akani Simbine revealed in an interview with Sports Passion.

“When I got into track, I was looking at Asafa a lot, and Yohan Blake too. I didn’t particularly look at Usain Bolt because I had nothing to attach myself to him.

“With Yohan, it’s because he was a short, stocky guy, and I was like, I’m a pretty short sprinter. For me, I was like he is short and fast, and I believed I could do that. For Asafa, he was taller but had that speed to him, and he was also a little bit stocky, and I would attach that to him.”

Akani Simbine added that despite having mentors at the start of his career, he disclosed that he had to stop idolising them at some point in his career.

He revealed that when lining up for competitions, he would constantly want his mentors to be better than him.

“Those were the ones I looked up to, and I stopped after a point, I guess, when I ran my first race in 2015. I had to stop idolising my mentors because I when I do that, I give them a mental up over me,” Akani Simbine revealed.

“I needed to learn that when I line up with them, we are just the same and beat them. I told myself that I would stop idolising them and see them as competitors, and respect them for what they have done for the game and themselves. That was a big change for me.”

Akani Simbine’s journey reflects the evolution of an athlete who once drew inspiration from Asafa Powell and Yohan Blake but learned to trust his own path.
