After pressure from his fans, marathon king Eliud Kipchoge has broken his silence with a condolence post towards Kelvin Kiptum's family which has not been taken lightly by Kenyans on X.

Five-time Berlin Marathon champion Eliud Kipchoge has broken his silence on Kelvin Kiptum’s death in a post on his Instagram page.

Fans had put him under the pump and were questioning why the marathon king was silent but he proved them wrong with the post, expressing his condolences to the family of the fallen hero.

However, Kipchoge proved that there was no rivalry between himself and Kiptum, the reigning London Marathon champion, following his post on his social media.

Kipchoge said: “I’m deeply saddened by the tragic passing of the Marathon world record holder and rising star Kelvin Kiptum.

“An athlete who had a whole life ahead of him to achieve incredible greatness. I offer my deepest condolences to his young family. May God comfort you during this trying period.”

However, Kipchoge’s message was not received well by Kenyans on X as they went after him, asking why he could not congratulate Kiptum when he was alive.

One angry user said: “F****** give me flowers when I'm still alive.” Another X user added a comment saying: “You didn't congratulate Kelvin Kiptum when he broke the marathon record, but now you have the audacity to send a condolence message?”

Another user added a comment saying: “It took you 10 good hrs to construct this three-paragraph condolence note?” Another angry user, Gilbert Kibiwott said: “You never congratulated him. Now you are quick in sharing your tributes when he is gone. No competitor.”

“Hypocrite. You Quick to mourn him but congratulating him when he beat you hands down is where you draw the line?” one user asked.

Meanwhile, other users also sided with Kipchoge, explaining that he has a good heart or maybe he does not have control of his social media handles.

One said: “Could be he doesn't control his social media accounts .... Nike and Isuzu could be the people with Kipchoge's login details.”

Another one added a comment to Kipchoge’s post saying: “Rest in peace Kelvin Kiptum. I know Eliud Kipchoge has the cleanest heart. He would never wish Kelvin any harm.”

“Give this man a break, he is the most decorated Kenyan athlete, the face of marathon running. Even if Kiptum was to break his record, Kipchoge did it first. Many of you seem to be filled with hatred due to Kipchoge's successful career,” another user said.
