Faith Cherotich finished second behind Winfred Yavi in the women’s 3000m steeplechase at the Prefontaine Classic on Saturday.
Her second-place finish came after she silenced the reigning Olympic champion in two consecutive Diamond League Meetings, in Oslo and Doha.
Winfred Yavi, competing at the Hayward Field in Eugene, put up a good fight and finally secured a win over the Kenyan youngster, clocking 8:45.25 as Faith Cherotich came in second in a personal best time of 8:48.71.

Faith Cherotich opened her season at the Diamond League Meeting in Doha, crossing the finish line first in 9:05.08 before extending the winning streak to the meetings in Oslo and Paris, where she claimed dominant wins in 9:02.60 and 8:53.37.

Speaking in an interview after the race, Faith Cherotich admitted that she was not in her best shape going into the race and had to put in a lot of work to finish second.
She pointed out that the pace was too high, yielding a personal best time, but her efforts were not enough to overtake rival Winfred Yavi.
However, Faith Cherotich, the Olympic 3000m steeplechase bronze medallist, noted that she is going back to training and the next time they step on the track for a race, she will come out victorious again.

Kishane Thompson declared that he is his only competition after a dominant 9.85 win at the Prefontaine Classic, warning rivals ahead of the World Championships.
“Today’s race was good, I’m so happy and would like to congratulate my colleagues who came here today, and we managed to finish the race,” Faith Cherotich said in a video shared by Runner Space.
“Today, I was not feeling like I was in good shape, and I will go and prepare well ahead of my next race. The race was okay, but the pace was high, so I didn’t manage to catch up with Yavi, but I will go and train hard and come back stronger.”
Faith Cherotich has recorded decent performances in the first quarter of the season and she hopes to extend the hot streak even to the Athletics Kenya National Trials ahead of the World Championships in Tokyo, Japan.
