Tshepiso Masalela, who has been on a roll this season, clocked a world-leading time to stun Olympic champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi at the Diamond League Meeting in Rabat.

Botswana’s Tshepiso Masalela oozed class as he dominated the 800m at the Diamond League Meeting in Rabat, winning in a world-leading time and obliterating the meeting record.

The race started with Emmanuel Wanyonyi running in the middle of the pack, looking very comfortable. As the athletes ran the first lap, Botswana’s Tshepiso Masalela was in the lead.

Going into the race, Emmanuel Wanyonyi revealed that he was ready for the challenge and was looking forward to winning the race, just like he did at the 2024 edition.

However, the race did not go as he expected, forcing him to finish distant second as the Motswana, who had been on a roll this season, claimed the win.

Emmanuel Wanyonyi noted that this season, he will only be focusing on the 800m solely, and the 1500m will be basically for endurance.

“First of all, I’m ready to defend my title tomorrow…I don’t need to talk too much, but just show my fans that I can do it,” Emmanuel Wanyonyi said.

“This is my first Diamond League for this, and I don’t expect to run very fast. I need to run my race tomorrow and have fun. I will not run the 1500m in Tokyo, I need to run the 800m, and I’m not rushing to the 1500m very fast.”

Emmanuel Wanyonyi started his season by winning the 2km at the Kenyan Cross-Country Championships before competing in the first leg of Michael Johnson’s Grand Slam Track in Kingston, Jamaica, winning the 1500m and finishing second in the 800m.

The 20-year-old also won the mile road at the Adizero Road to Records, before his impressive run at the Diamond League Meeting in Rabat.
