American Allen CJ ran perhaps the worst race of his career at the Shanghai Diamond League meeting.

USA men's national record holder over 400m hurdles indoors Allen CJ fell short at the Shanghai Diamond League meeting on Saturday.

The American finished in a disappointing sixth position, clocking a time of 49.24 seconds in a race dominated by 2020 Tokyo Olympics champion Warholm Karsten.

The Norwegian cut the tape in 47.28 seconds to cruise to victory, although it was short of his personal best that stands at 45.93 seconds.

Brazilian Lima Matheus came in second. The 21-year-old who in March 2024 ran the second fastest time in Brazilian history in the 400m, with a time of 44.52, improved on his Personal Best time of 48.12 by hitting new heights of 48.08 in Shanghai.

Sweden's Carl Bengstrom closed the podium in 48.72. The result was tough to take for Allen considering he finished runner-up in the 400m hurdles at the 2024 Doha Diamond League.

He followed that up with a third place at the 2024 Prefontaine Classic, and third place at the 2024 BAUHAUS-galan Diamond League event in Stockholm. Allen finished second in the 400m hurdles at the US Olympic trials and reached the semifinals of the event at the Paris Olympic Games.

Warholm has been a dominant force in the specialty, winning gold at the World Championships in 2017, 2019 and 2023.

The 29-year-old is the 2018, 2022, and 2024 European champion. Warholm is the first athlete ever to win three 400m hurdles events at the World Championships and also is a two-time Diamond League champion.

In 2021, he was voted World Athletics Male Athlete of the Year.

Why Matheus Lima is a threat

Even though the top three 400m hurdles athletes currently are Warholm, Rai Benjamin who missed the Shanghai edition, and Alison dos Santos (Brazil), Lima is a threat going forward.

At 21, the Brazilian's career is on the ascendency and his consistency over various distances should worry his rivals. Lima boasts a personal best of 21.28 in 200m set in 2022.

Last year in Sao Paulo, he clocked 44.52 in 400m and has also managed 33.98 in 300m that he achieved in Xiamen in 2025.
