African champion Abel Kipsang intends to set the world leading time when he lines up to defend the Kip Keino Classic 1500m crown at Kasarani Stadium, Nairobi on Saturday.
The 22-year-old who finished fourth at the Tokyo Olympic Games hopes to build on his competition sharpness and eventually win the World Championships in Budapest later this year.

He turned on the style to win the third Kip Keino Classic at the same stadium last year, setting a then world leading time of 3:31.01. Kipsang hopes the elaborate preparations he has had leading up to this race will steer him towards his desired target.
“I have had a very good preparation towards the Kip Keino Classic event. Last year I ran a world leading time and I am certain I will repeat the same feat,” said the athlete considered heir to the mile throne.
Kenya has had Elijah Manangoi and Timothy Cheruiyot dominating the men’s mile in the last six years but Kipsang seems to be the strongest, youngest, and most promising athlete poised to take over the mantle.
Packed with a powerful lungs and descent kick, the 22-year old has worked on his speed as much as the requisite endurance to better his performance on the competitive 1500m that has seen recent incursion by European athletes.

Britain’s Jake Whitman led four other Europeans in a top five finish at last year’s World Championships in Oregon USA, confining Kipsang to a disappointing seventh place behind compatriot Cheruiyot.
