Mohamed Salah leads Egypt into a decisive AFCON 2025 Round of 16 clash with Benin as Nigeria and Mozambique also battle for quarter-final spots in Morocco.

The CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 enters its third day of the round of 16 on Monday, January 5, 2026.

Following a high-stakes Sunday that saw Morocco and Cameroon book their places in the quarter-finals, two more African giants are set to battle for survival in Agadir and Fès.

Morocco secured a 1-0 win over Tanzania's Taifa Stars, with Cameroon defeating South Africa’s Bafana Bafana 2-1 to secure their slot in the quarterfinal. On the opening day of the knockout rounds, Senegal and Mali secured their spots in the next phase.

AFCON 2025 Round of 16: Egypt vs Benin

In the afternoon kickoff, record seven-time champions Egypt face off against Benin at the Grand Stade d'Agadir.

Egypt cruised through the group stages unbeaten, finishing atop Group B with seven points. Led by the evergreen Mohamed Salah and a disciplined defensive unit, the Pharaohs are the clear favourites as they look to end a 16-year wait for a continental title.

However, they would be unwise to overlook Benin. The Cheetahs secured their Round of 16 berth by proving they can scrap with the best, most notably defeating Botswana 1-0 in Group D.

While Benin has only won one of its four historical meetings against Egypt, its 2019 run to the quarter-finals remains fresh in the memory of fans, proving it has the temperament for knockout football.

AFCON 2025 Round of 16: Nigeria vs Mozambique

The late-night spotlight shines on the Complexe Sportif de Fès as Nigeria take on Mozambique. The Super Eagles have arguably been the most entertaining team of the tournament so far, entering the knockouts with the most prolific attack after netting eight goals in three matches.

With Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman in fine form, Nigeria is widely tipped to go one better than their runner-up finish in 2023.

Standing in their way is a Mozambique side riding a wave of historic momentum. The Mambas ended a 40-year wait for an AFCON victory with a thrilling 3-2 win over Gabon in the group stage to advance.

Though they have only avoided defeat against Nigeria once in five attempts, their clinical counter-attacking style could pose problems for a Nigerian defence that has occasionally looked vulnerable.
