Yanga assured of shs3.7bn, Onyango’s Sundowns staring at shs15bn cash prize money

The Confederations of African Football has announced a 40 percent increase to the CAF Champions League and Confederations Cup prize money.

This, they said on Friday, is in line with CAF President Patrice Motsepe’s strategy to make the tournament more competitive.

“The announcement saw prize monies for the two competition increase by 40% - in line with Dr Motsepe’s commitment to making African football competitions globally competitive and self-sustaining,” CAF explained.

Under the new arrangement, all four semi-finalists from the respective competitions are assured of USD 1.2 million and USD 1 million.

Denis Onyango’s Mamelodi Sundowns who play Wydad Casablanca on Saturday in Pretoria in the second leg, will fight to win at least USD 2 million or the ultimate prize of USD 4 million (shs.14.8 billion) in case they go all the way and beat AL Ahly in the final.

Tanzania’s Young Africans, who play USM Algiers in the final of the CAF Confederations Cup, could win themselves up to USD 2 million if they go ahead to make history.
