Now, the Premier League is within touching distance.

"It has been the aim since day one to get into the Premier League, it really has," Reynolds told ESPN after the match. "Nothing has really changed about that."

Reynolds also commented on the club's global impact, saying, "It is just so moving to see how galvanising it is around here... and just to see people all over the world adopt Wrexham as sometimes their second team, sometimes their only team, it is a really beautiful thing."

The two were speaking after watching their side run Chelsea close before losing 4-2 in extra time in an FA Cup fifth round tie.

Phil Parkinson Aligned with Owners

It marked Wrexham's first, and bitter, experience with VAR, which was central to both George Dobson's dismissal and a disallowed extra-time goal for Lewis Brunt.

McElhenney noted the crowd's reaction, telling ESPN, "I think the chant was f--- VAR. At the end of the day, the rules are the rules, and I feel like we put on a really great performance."

Manager Phil Parkinson has also set his sights on the Premier League with his side sixth in the English Championship, the final promotion playoff position.

"That has to be the aim [Premier League], playing these teams," Parkinson said. "That's what you're in football for, to have nights like this. We look forward to being involved in big games like this."

Wrexham have spent big in recent years in an effort to complete their remarkable story and did the same in January, bringing a number of players who include Harambee Stars prospect Zak Vyner.
