Kenya displayed their athletics prowess once more after finishing second at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan as the event ended on Sunday.

Team Kenya went to Tokyo looking to improve on the 10 medals that they won in Budapest, Hungary in 2023 and while they improved by one, in terms of the total haul, there was a massive increase in their gold medals.

Kenya ended the 2025 edition second on the medal standings only behind the United States of America after winning 11 medals as the Americans claimed 26.

Team Kenya won a remarkable seven gold medals, a massive improvement from the three managed in Budapest two years ago, with two silver and as many bronze.

It matches the gold medals achieved by the country at the 2011 World Championships in Daegu, South Korea, when they managed a total of 17 medals, Kenya’s best-ever, and the seven achieved in Beijing, China in 2015, when they managed a total of 16, the country’s second-best performance in the history of the competition.

Six of Kenya’s gold medals came from women, led by Beatrice Chebet, the indefatigable double Olympics champion, claiming two gold medals in 10,000m and 5,000m, the only athlete from the country who managed that feat.

Another gold medal came from Faith Kipyegon, who defended her 1,500m title, while Peres Jepchirchir claimed the women’s marathon title, bringing back a medal that had eluded the country since 2019.

Meanwhile, Faith Cherotich stunned Winfred Yavi to claim the 3,000m steeplechase gold while Lilian Odira was the surprise 800m world champion, when she displayed a great finishing kick, to claim the title after stunning defending champion Mary Moraa and Olympics gold medalist Keely Hodgkinson.

With six of the seven gold medals coming from Kenyan women, only Emmanuel Wanyonyi was the male runner who won the most sought-after medal, as he claimed the 800m title for the first time in his career, adding it onto his Olympics gold.

Kenya’s two silver medals were won in the women’s 5,000m through Kipyegon and the 1,500m when Dorcas Ewoi, made sure of a Kenyan 1-2, while two bronze medals came courtesy of Reynold Cheruiyot (men’s 1,500m) and Edmund Serem (men’s 3,000m steeplechase).
