We planned it - Chelsea’s Delap reveals the pre-match strategy that led to first Blues goal
Liam Delap expressed satisfaction after scoring his first goal for Chelsea, helping the team secure their place in the Club World Cup knockout stage.
Enzo Maresca’s team defeated Esperance 3-0, with Tosin Adarabioyo opening the scoring just before half-time.
Delap then added the second with a well-taken goal, followed by Tyrique George wrapping up the victory in the final moments.
Delap reveals pre-match discussion with Fernandez
The 22-year-old striker commented on the importance of the match, as the win guaranteed their progression to the Round of 16, where they will face Benfica.
“We knew we had to win tonight to get through, and we’re pleased to get the job done,” Delap said.
“It’s a really happy feeling [to score] and hopefully it’s the first of many. I love playing football and to play for such a good team is a great feeling.”
Delap also extended his gratitude to Enzo Fernandez for the assist, revealing a pre-match conversation where Fernandez encouraged him to make runs when he received the ball.
“I spoke to Enzo and he told me that when he gets the ball that I should run, and it was a great pass, and luckily it went in,” the forward revealed.
Chelsea finished the group stage on six points, one behind Flamengo, who won two and drew their final game with Los Angeles FC.
What’s next for Chelsea?
Maresca's team will face Benfica in the competition’s last 16, seeking a place in the quarter-finals.
Given Nicolas Jackson’s extended absence, Delap is expected to lead the attack against the Portuguese giants.
