He stated that the Merseysiders cannot afford to concede two goals from set pieces, especially at difficult away grounds like St. James' Park.

What Liverpool captain Van Dijk said

"Yes, it's not easy to play at Newcastle, but we can't be conceding two goals from set pieces. We're disappointed with that. Ultimately, though, we took the three points and we're looking forward," Van Dijk told Sky Sports.

"They put us under pressure with free-kicks and corners, which is a strength of theirs. Of the top six teams, only two managed to get a win at Newcastle's stadium last year, if I remember correctly. It's a tough place to visit and that was evident again today (Monday - ed.). I love playing in an atmosphere like this, but it definitely would have been easier if we hadn't conceded those goals from set pieces. That just motivates the opposition and their fans," he continued.

Liverpool secured the win with a goal in the tenth minute of added time. Mohamed Salah played a low pass towards the penalty area, and Dominik Szoboszlai let the ball run through his legs, which put Rio Ngumoha one-on-one with the Newcastle goalkeeper. The just 16-year-old forward shot instantly into the far corner to make it 3-2.

"It was a dream debut for him. The attack itself was just perfect. I'm pleased we kept our composure until the end and found a way to win the match. But most of all, I'm happy for Rio. This is just the beginning for him, but he can't take nights like this for granted. He needs to get straight back to the training ground and work. That's the only way he'll succeed," the Dutch international added.

"We ourselves can only get back into last year's rhythm through training and matches. The start of the season was tough, but we expected that. We want to show we're the best team on the ball, but at the start, we have to be a bit more direct. As I said, it's difficult to play at Newcastle because they press high and have the support of their fans," Van Dijk concluded.
