The Ballon d'Or award for the best men's footballer of the year went to a direct toss-up between Ousmane Dembele and Lamine Yamal, of which the Paris Saint-Germain star came out on top.

Dembele won the award after an incredible year with the French champions, winning every domestic competition on offer and the Parisiens' maiden UCL title to boot.

He beat a star-studded list of 30 nominees for the award, including Yamal, who came second. The teenager showed class, however, embracing Dembele and seemingly congratulating him.

The Spain international had picked up the Kopa Trophy earlier that night with his friends, family and some teammates in attendance at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris.

He won the trophy for the second consecutive year, a record. He stood the chance to double his award count on the night when the big one came, but the votes went the way of Dembele, his former Barcelona teammate.

Ousmane was presented the award by Brazilian football legend Ronaldinho and accepted the award by delivering a heartfelt message to a boisterous crowd excited about his triumph. 

Yamal, who he pipped to the award, approached him later that night, going by the clips making the rounds and appeared to have congratulated him before they shook hands and shared an embrace.
