[WATCH]: Dominican Republic welcome Olympic gold medalist Marileidy Paulino with funfare
Dominican Republic have welcomed their historic Olympic Gold medalist, Marileidy Paulino, with loud cheers and jubilations.
Dominican Republic's Marileidy Paulino made history, claiming the gold medal in the women's 400m at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
In a thrilling race, Paulino crossed the finish line in an astonishing time of 48.17 seconds; she also broke the Olympic record previously held by Marie-José Pérec.
Bahrain's Salwa Eid Naser secured the silver medal with a time of 48.53 seconds, while Poland's Natalia Kaczmarek claimed bronze in 48.98 seconds.
Paulino on making history for her country
While reflecting on her history-making achievement in France, Paulino said her country really needed the gold medal.
“For me this gold medal means a lot. It was the medal that I needed to complete an Olympic cycle, and it is a medal that my country needed,” Paulino told Olympics.com.
She is also of the opinion that her achievement at the 2024 edition of the Olympic games would inspire the younger generations.
“The truth is that it was worth it because I think it will inspire many young people who are in a precarious situation; many doors will open for them because of me.”
The Dominican Republic athlete was happy as she won in front of a crowd who cheered her every step.
